General Notes:
MANOAH5 ELLIS (Samuel,4 Samuel,3 Manoah,2 Lt. John1), born about 1752, died in Pierpont, Ohio, 15 Oct. 1837 (C. R. Howland, op. cit., footnote).
He married 8 Dec. 1774 SUSANNAH LONG (Rev. Isaiah Dunster officiated, Harwich Town Records), born about 1755, died in Pierpont 31 July 1835, daughter of William and Sarah (Cahoon) Long of Harwich.
Mr. Howland says that he had removed to Lee in the western part of the state before 24 Sept. 1785 when he bought land there. But he was settled in Lee before 3 March 1783 when he was chosen a surveyor there (Records of the Town of Lee (1900), p. 26). He sold 77 acres of land in Lee 24 Sept. 1786, his wife, Susannah, releasing her dower right. By a deed of 20 Oct. 1791, in which he is called "of Lee," he bought two parcels of land in Becket; and in a deed, dated 19 May 1792, in which he is called "of Becket," he bought two large additional lots. There are further deeds which show that he conveyed Becket land to his son Manoah Ellis, Jr., and to his son Cornelius Ellis. These three sold out their Becket holdings, 260 acres "whereon we now live," 20 April 1814, by conveyance to the state of Connecticut (says Howland). Mr. Howland tells us also that in a letter, dated in 1806, Manoah Ellis wrote to Eben Brooks, a selectman of Harwich, in which he mentioned his brother Samuel Ellis.
Before 1820 we learn that "he and his wife Susannah and most of their children moved to Pierpont, Ohio, and settled on a large estate that he had bought from the State of Conn." in what was known as the Connecticut or Western Reserve. The property which he owned there later was set off as the town of Richmond in 1828.
Mr. Howland says that among his descendants in Pierpont it was known that this Manoah5 Ellis was a mariner in his youth and that he was described as "Capt. Manoah Ellis of Cape Cod." [Lt. John & Elizabeth (Freeman) Ellis of Sandwich, Mass by Lydia B. (Phinney) Brownson, of Duxbury, Mass & Maclean W. McLean, of Pittsburg, PA]
Manoah married Susannah Long, daughter of William Long and Sarah Cahoon, on 8 Dec 1774 in Harwich, Barnstable, MA.65 (Susannah Long was born about 1755 65 and died on 31 Jul 1835 in Pierpont, Ashtabula, OH 65.)
