  General Notes:

NATHANIEL5 ELLIS (Dea. Ephraim,4 Malachi,3 Lt. Matthias,2 Lt. John1), born 24 Aug. 1740 (Vital Records of Nantucket), baptized in Sandwich 14 Sept. 1740, died possibly in Vermont in June 1817.

This Nathaniel Ellis is named in the codicil, 9 Nov. 1757, to the will of his grandfather, John3 Ellis (No. 8), as well as in the will of his father, 15 June 1773, by which he was to receive half of the estate, and of which he was named co-executor. In view of his possession of inherited property in Sandwich it would be interesting to know why he settled in at least two other places. He served as a private in the Revolution (Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolutionary War). He was of Sandwich in September 1783 when he and his brother Malachi appraised the estate of Joshua Blackwell. He is listed as head of a family in Sandwich in the 1790 Census consisting of 2 males over 16 and 3 females. He is called "Nathaniel Ellis of Sherburn, County of Nantucket, cordwainer," in a deed, dated 30 Nov. 1793, by which he and his brother Malachi Ellis of Sandwich sold a Sandwich lot which had belonged to their father (Sandwich Deeds, Book 2, p. 495). He is conclusively identified by a deed, dated 27 Sept. 1808, when he is called "Nathaniel Ellis of Nantasket (Hull), County Suffolk, cordwainer." He and his brother then conveyed to Elisha Burges a Sandwich wood-lot, abutting northeasterly upon land of Prince Tupper--some 40 acres "for description of the premises reference may be had to our grandfather Malachi Ellis' will in which he gave the above-mentioned land to our father, Ephraim Ellis, deceased" (ibid., p. 188).

The Vital Records of Nantucket show the following entries which we think may refer to this man (the basis for this hypothesis is solely the fact that he was living in Shelburn, Nantucket, when he signed a deed, dated 27 Sept. 1808): "Nathaniel Ellis, h. Joanna Blackwell of Sandwich, d. 6 mo. 1817, aet. 74 yrs. 6 mos., in Vermont. Eunice Ellis, w. Ellis Tupper of Sandwich: dau. Nathaniel & Joanna (Blackwell) Ellis of Sandwich. Jonathan Ellis, h. Hannah (dau. Reuben Swain & Hannah), son Nathaniel & Joanna (Blackwell)." There is also the fragmentary corroboration, in terms of the alleged death "in Vermont," in that Freeman in his History of Cape Cod, vol. 2, p. 133, notes that "Nathaniel Ellis (son of Ephraim) removed to Barnard, Vt."
