  General Notes:

LT. MALACHI5 ELLIS (Dea. Ephraim,4 Malachi,3 Lt, Matthias,2 Lt. John1), born 6 March 1738/9, baptized 15 April 1739, died 23 June 1811, aet. 72 (Sandwich Church Records).

He married first, 7 Nov. 1759, SUSANNAH DENNIS (Vital Records of Rochester), possibly a daughter of Abraham and Mary (Ellis) Dennis; and secondly, 25 Nov. 1773, MERCY TRIPP (ibid.).

He is named in the codicil of his grandfather John3 Ellis' will, dated 9 Nov. 1757.

By a deed, dated 18 March 1771, "Malachi Ellis of Sandwich, ... cordwainer," bought the 45-acre homestead farm of Francis Crapo in Middleborough (PLCD, vol. 56, p. 10). He sold this property the next year, his wife Susannah Ellis signing a release of her dower rights (ibid., vol. 8, p. 103).

His military service as Sergeant, Lieutenant, etc., in the Revolution is given in some detail in Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolutionary War. He petitioned the General Court, 26 April 1779, "praying he may be allowed the charges he was at by having the Small Pox while in the service of this State," and was awarded compensation of £84., in full of his account (Acts & Resolves, op. cit., vol. 20).

By his father's will, dated 15 July 1773 and proved 8 July 1783, he was given half the real property. He is called "of Rochester, cordwainer," in a deed of 13 Jan. 1785 when he paid Jesse Tripp £37. 13s. for 8 acres in the 2nd Precinct there, bounded by the road leading to the Mattapoisett Meeting House (PLCD, vol. 89, p. 174).

He had returned to Sandwich before 30 Nov. 1793, as by a deed "Malachi Ellis of Sandwich, cordwainer and (his brother) Nathaniel Ellis of Sherburn" sold for £6. paid by Stephen Bassett "part of a 20-acre lot of which our father, late of Sandwich, died seized" (Sandwich Deed Book, op. cit., vol. 2, p. 495). He was admitted to full communion in the Sandwich Church, 28 Aug. 1808. By a deed, dated 27 Sept. 1808, he and his brother Nathaniel Ellis conveyed to Elisha Burges a Sandwich wood-lot of 40 acres, described as having come to them through "our grandfather Malachi Ellis' will, in which he gave the above mentioned land to our Father, Ephraim Ellis, deceased" (Sandwich Deeds, op. cit., vol. 2, p. 188).

He died intestate and his son, Malachi Ellis, was acting as administrator, 25 July 1818, when the deceased is called "Malachi Ellis, cordwainer, late of Rochester, deceased, intestate" (Plymouth County Probate, vol. 49, p. 528). He was closely identified with both Sandwich and the 2nd Precinct of Rochester (which in 1857 became Mattapoisett). In Mattapoisett and Old Rochester (1907), p. 258, it is stated that when the church there was founded, 23 Jan. 1795, Malachi Ellis was one of the founders.
