  General Notes:

JAMES4 ELLIS (Manoah,3 Manoah,2 Lt. John1) was born about 1717.

He married first, 3 March 1741/2, DESIRE4 ELLIS ("both of Harwich," Harwich Vital Records, Mayflower Descendant, vol. 24, p. 112), born about 1722, daughter of Samuel3 and Thankful (Smith) Ellis; and secondly, 23 Aug. 1752, SARAH ALLEN ("of Dartmouth," Vital Records of Dartmouth).

He is named in the will, dated 2 Dec. 1726, of his grandfather, Isaac Atkins. Paine (op. cit.) notes that in 1758 James Ellis was attending Quaker Meeting and requested that he, therefore, be excused from paying "ye priest or minister's rates." It is this notation which leads us to suppose that we are correct in believing that it was this James Ellis who married Sarah Allen as his second wife. In Dartmouth, as had been the case in Sandwich at an earlier period, most of the members of the Allen families were active in the Society of Friends. A thorough study of the Dartmouth and Sandwich Friends records may reveal additional data on this family. It would seem probable that he had more than one child, but we have not identified any other children.
