NATHANIEL5 ELLIS (Mordecai,4 Mordecai,3 Lt. Mordecai,2 Lt. John1), born 14 Nov. 1756, died in Hanover 5 Feb. 1817.
He married 20 July 1787 MARY RAMSDELL, born 29 July 1771, died 22 Jan. 1748, daughter of Joseph Ramsdell.
He is of record in Hanover in the 1790 Census, head of a household of two males over 16, one under 16 and two females. By a deed, dated 28 May 1790, Isaac Winslow of Marshfield, physician, and his wife Elizabeth, sold, for £30. "paid by Nathaniel Ellis of Hanover, yeoman, " a lot of 9 acres adjoining Mordecai Ellis (PLCD, vol. 72, p. 211). On 13 May 1793 he bought from his brother Mordecai for £150. one half the latter's home farm in Hanover, and in the following November bought a lot at Pine Island nearby from his brother Clark Ellis (ibid., vol. 76, p. 14). By a deed of 29 May 1797 Joseph Ramsdell, gentleman, and Nathaniel Ellis, yeoman, both of Hanover, sold for $90 paid by Charles Bailey a one-fifth share of the saw mill called The Furnace Mill in Hanover, described as standing on Drinkwater River (ibid., vol. 86, p. 35). By a deed of 7 Nov. 1800 Mordecai4 Ellis conveyed for $1,000 "paid by my son Nathaniel Ellis" 35 acres in Abington, complete with buildings, subject to certain reservation of privileges for the children of the dead son, David5 Ellis (ibid., vol. 90, p. 244).
The will, dated 22 Nov. 1803, of Mordecai4 Ellis gives this son Nathaniel the other half of the home farm, together with other bequests on the understanding that Nathaniel be responsible for the welfare of his invalid brother Otis. He made Nathaniel co-executor. He died intestate and Barker Ramsdell was named administrator, 3 March 1817 (Plymouth County Probate, vol. 48, p. 380). His widow, Mary Ellis, was awarded her dower right in the real property, 8 April 1817, also a ¼ pew in the Episcopal Church in Hanover (ibid., p. 490). [Lt.
