General Notes:
CLARK5 ELLIS (Mordecai,4 Mordecai,3 Lt. Mordecai,2 Lt. John1), born 23 Aug. 1754, died in Hanover 27 April 1836.
He married 14 Sept. 1782 RUTH SPOONER (Vital Records of Abington), born 9 Oct. 1762, died in Hanover 19 Sept. 1846, daughter of Ephraim and Mary (Jackson) Spooner.
They settled in Abington, probably upon land given by unrecorded deed by his parents, or hers. By a deed, dated 10 April 1788, "Clark Ellis of Abington, yeoman and Ruth Ellis his wife" sold for £68. to his brother-in-law, Joseph Ramsdell, Jr., of Hanover a 17½-acre parcel of Abington land. The purpose of this transaction is obscure but four days later the same Joseph Ramsdell, Jr. (his wife Elizabeth relinquishing her dower right), sold the same property for an equal sum to "Ruth Ellis of Abington ... wife of Clark Ellis," the property being described as adjoining the dwelling house of said Clark Ellis and the land of Mordecai Ellis, Jr. (PLCD, vol. 69, p. 11-13). In a deed of 12 Jan. 1793 Mordecai4 Ellis and his wife Sarah conveyed to their son, Clark Ellis, "of Abington, Cordwainer," an additional six-acre lot there (ibid., vol. 76, p. 260). Three months later, similarly described, he paid Joseph Rogers of Marshfield £550. for a 116-acre farm, complete with dwelling house, barn, etc., situated partly in Abington and partly in Hanover, described as the farm where Maj. Luther Bailey now dwells (ibid., p. 260). In November 1793 now called "of Hanover" he sold to his brother Mordecai Ellis a tract of land, "being part of Pine Island in Hanover" (ibid.). By deed of 20 Oct. 1800, still called "of Hanover, cordwainer," he sold for £142. to (his nephew) Barker Ramsdell of Hanover, saddletree-maker, 18 acres of his land, partly in Hanover and partly in Abington. His wife Ruth released dower rights (ibid., vol. 89, p. 174). The will of Mordecai4 Ellis, dated 22 June 1803, names his son Clark Ellis and "my two grandsons Spooner Ellis and Thomas Ellis, children of my son Clark Ellis." We find no probate of Clark Ellis' estate. [Lt. John & Elizabeth (Freeman) Ellis of Sandwich, Mass by Lydia B. (Phinney) Brownson, of Duxbury, Mass & Maclean W. McLean, of Pittsburg, PA]
