General Notes:
MORDECAL4 ELLIS (John,3 Lt. Mordecai,2 Lt. John1), born 29 Oct. 1713, baptized 7 Feb. 1713/14, died after 9 May 1770.
He married (we think shortly after 25 June 1738) HANNAH4 FISH, born in Sandwich 8 July 1711, baptized there 25 Sept. 1715, died there testate in 1779, daughter of John and Mehitable Fish.
Mordecai4 Ellis was admitted to the Sandwich church 28 Aug. 1737. His marriage is not recorded in Sandwich, but we believe there is sufficient circumstantial evidence to identify his wife as shown above. "Hannah Fish" was admitted to the Sandwich church 25 June 1738 together with Mercy4 (Ellis) Fish, the wife of her brother John Fish and the sister of Mordecai4 Ellis. Furthermore, her sister, Mary Fish, had married in 1728 Nathaniel4 Ellis, the eldest sibling of this Mordecai Ellis. Although Hannah was perhaps the most common girl's name at that period, a careful check of the Sandwich town and church records reveals that in this instance there was no other suitable bride of that name for this Mordecai Ellis and since the list of admittals to the Sandwich church for the period is complete, he evidently did not marry a girl from another community, since there is no record of his wife having been admitted. Furthermore all the children were baptized in the Sandwich church, to Mordecai Ellis and his wife Hannah, so she was a church member. Finally, it will be seen that the witnesses to the will, 1779, of Hannah Ellis were her youngest brother Edmond Fish and his wife Betty and their eldest son John Fish.
In 1744 this Mordecai4 Ellis was named executor under the will of his uncle, Josiah3 Ellis (No. 9 above). In his father's will, dated 30 July 1748, he was given all the real property, both in Sandwich and elsewhere, and all the farming utensils and equipment (his elder brother Nathaniel was then dead and his other brothers had left the Cape) and was named executor. In the codicil to his father's will, dated 9 Nov. 1757, he is given only a specified piece of salt marsh in Sandwich, which implies that in the interim the father had given him, by deed, the rest of the real estate. He witnessed the will, 14 July 1754, of his first cousin, Josiah Ellis (No. 34 below), and after the death of the latter's widow he was appointed guardian of their children, Josiah and Mary Ellis. In 1768 as their guardian he received receipt from them both. In March 1768 he was appointed by the court to divide the estate of Rowland Ellis (No. 51 below), son of his cousin, Malachi Ellis (No. 16 above). It seems evident that he disposed of his own estate by deed to his only son Elisha Ellis, no doubt subject to the life term use by his widow Hannah.
The will of "Hannah Ellis of Sandwich," dated 20 July 1779 and proved 29 Nov. 1779, gives "To my grandson Mordecai Ellis, two sheep. To my grandson Elisha Ellis, two sheep, to my grandson Nathaniel Ellis one sheep ... To my grand daughters Hannah Ellis ... Sarah Ellis ... (household furnishings) ... All the residue to my daughter Marcy Peckham." Witnesses: Edmond Fish, Betty Fish, John Fish. She did not name an executor and the court appointed her daughter-in-law, Mary (Swift) Ellis, widow of her son Elisha Ellis administratrix (Barnstable County Probate, vol. 23, p. 6). [Lt.
