  General Notes:

JOHN4 ELLIS (John,3 Lt. Mordecai,2 Lt. John1), born 4 Feb. 1704/5, baptized 20 June 1708, died in Hebron, Conn., in October 1792 "aet. 88 yrs." (Gilead Cemetery inscriptions, Hebron).

He married 4 Feb. 1730 ROSE3 JENNINGS, born in Sandwich 27 Aug. 1710, died probably in Hebron before 24 Aug. 1791, daughter of Isaac2 Jennings by his first wife, Rose (Goodspeed) Jennings.

The births and baptisms of the first three children of John and Rose Ellis are recorded in Plymouth. The Plymouth County deeds show that his father had purchased a tract of land in Plymouth upon which this son John settled-probably about 1734. As we have seen, John3 Ellis sold several tracts of his Plymouth land, 5 Feb. 1734/5, including "the land and house where my son John Ellis now dwelleth" to Benjamin Morey, and the latter re-conveyed to this son, John4 Ellis "of Plymouth, husbandman." Thus John4 Ellis came into his inheritance during his father's life time and his farm was situated in that part of Plymouth which on 10 July 1739 was set off and, with part of Rochester, established as the new town of Wareham. Hezekiah Bourne of Wareham conveyed by deed, 7 Nov. 1740 for £55. to "John Ellis of Wareham, gentleman," a parcel of land at Indian Neck adjoining Ellis' farm (PLCD, vol. 35, p. 26). By deed of 8 Feb. 1742/3 Bourne sold, for £20. an additional lot of 42 acres, adjoining the earlier purchase, of upland at Indian Neck (ibid., p. 168).
Having thus established himself comfortably in Wareham, John3 Ellis soon tired of his relatively easy life as the following interesting deed shows, and sold out lock, stock and barrel:

"I, John Ellis of Wareham ... gentleman, convey for £1,600. paid by Ebenezer Bourn of same, boatman, ... all my several parcells of land, meadow & cedar swamp, together with my dwelling house and barns in Wareham, which I hold by deed from Benjamin Morey and a lot in Indian Neck near Crooked River on which stands my dwelling house, - about 30 acres, it being the 6th lot by number, originally laid out to Timothy Bourn, one third and to the heirs of Israel Fearing one third, and to the heirs of Isaac Wilder one third, and also a lot originally laid out to Timothy Bourn and Israel Fearing's heirs & Isaac Wilder's heirs, being ten acres in sd Agawam Purchase, together with one third interest in the Upper Division in sd Agawam, one third part Cedar Swamp in sd Agawam Purchase and one third, undivided freshmeadow, lying along the Agawam River, ... with all the wood, buildings and appurtenances and also 28 acres in Indian Neck which I hold by deeds dated 11 Nov., 1740 and 8 Feb. 1742/3 from Hezekiah Bourn ... this 20 April 1748" (ibid., vol. 39, p. 253-4).

The will, dated 30 July 1748, of the father John3 Ellis, gives "To my son John my gun and sword, besides what he hath already." The Wareham church records show that John Ellis and his wife "were dismissed to chh. in Hebron" 14 May 1749. The codicil to John3 Ellis' will gives this son John Ellis one milled dollar, a gun and firelock and one third of the testator's wearing apparel.
The will, dated 24 Aug. 1791 and proved 4 Dec. 1792, of "John Ellis of Hebron in the County of Tolland and State of Connecticut" gives "all my lands in Hebron to my son Jabez Ellis [also bedding and personal estate], except my wearing apparell ... sd Jabez to pay my son John Ellis in consideration thereof £5. worth of neat cattle ... to my daughter Mary and my son Barnabas ... in addition ... 6s. lawful money to each of them ... To my three sons Jabez Ellis, John Ellis and Barnabas Ellis all my wearing apparell to be equally divided between them." Son Jabez Ellis sole executor. Witnesses: William Talcolt, Asahel Hollister, Mary Talcott (Hebron Probate Records).
