General Notes:
CORNELIUS3 ELLIS (Manoah,2 Lt. John1), born about 1684, died after 7 May 1729.
He married about 1709 MERCY ATKINS, daughter of Isaac and Mercy Atkins of Harwich. The will, dated 2 Dec. 1726, of Isaac Atkins of Harwich, gives "to my beloved daughter Mercy Ellis" a share of the residuary estate (Barnstable County Probate, vol. 4, p. 514). Cornelius Ellis is listed among the householders of the Sixth "Remove" or school district into which Harwich was divided in 1726 (Paine, op. cit.). As was the case of his brother Manoah it is only because of the genealogically happy chance of a land dispute being appealed to a higher court that we find a deed of this man:
"Cornelius Ellis of Harwich ... yeoman," conveyed for £72. 11s., paid by Samuell Hall of the same place, "all my parcell of land in Harwich ... bounded Northerly on land of Samuell Nickerson, ... westerly on William Gray's land ... it being all the land I bought of John Gray and Thomas Clarke of sd Harwich and Daniell Baker and John Chace of Yarmouth ... this 7 May 1729." Acknowledged the same day and recorded by John Thacher. "From a true copy per John Sturges, Clerk" (Superior Court of Judicature-Boston, Docket 22765). We can find no probate records for either Cornelius Ellis or his wife Mercy. [Lt. John & Elizabeth (Freeman) Ellis of Sandwich, Mass by Lydia B. (Phinney) Brownson, of Duxbury, Mass & Maclean W. McLean, of Pittsburg, PA]
Cornelius married Mercy Atkins, daughter of Isaac Atkins and Mercy [Unknown], about 1709 5.,65 (Mercy Atkins was born of Harwich, Barnstable, MA 5,65.)
