Duke Henry III of Saxony
Another name for Henry was Henry the Lion. General Notes: Henry the Lion (1129-95), Duke of Saxony and Bavaria, was the son of Duke Henry the Proud, and a cousin of the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. He married Matilda, daughter of Henry II of England. Henry founded Munich, and encouraged the development of Hamburg, Lübek, and other towns. [World Wide Illustrated Encyclopedia, 1935] Noted events in his life were: • Title: Duke of Saxony, 1142-1180. 773 (Henry III) • Title: Duke of Bavaria, 1156-1180. 773 (Henry XII) Henry married Clementia of Zähringen, daughter of Duke Conrad of Zähringen and Clementia of Namur, in 1147.773 The marriage ended in divorce in 1162. (Clementia of Zähringen died before 1167 713.) Noted events in their marriage were: • Alt. Marriage, Cir 1150. 713 Henry next married Matilda Plantagenet, daughter of Henry II Plantagenet, King of England and Duchess Eleanor of Aquitaine, in 1168.773 (Matilda Plantagenet was born in 1156 in London, London, England and died on 28 Jun 1189 in Brunswick, Niedersachsen, Germany.)
