  General Notes:

Nathaniel4 Bassett (Nathan3) was born in Chatham, and died there before 10 April 1781 when his son Samuel Bassett was granted the administration of his estate (Barnstable County Probates, vol. 19, p. 43).

He married in Yarmouth, 23 Aug. 1739, Sarah Chase, the daughter of Thomas and Sarah (Gowell) Chase of Yarmouth. She was born in Yarmouth, 20 May 1722 and died before 15 March 1802 (ibid., vol. 25, p. 264).

Nathaniel Bassett was a religious man, but he left the established church. He joined the group "which are called Separatists or New Lights", who were later called Baptists. In 1749 he signed a petition requesting that those who did not belong to the established church should not be required to pay taxes for its maintenance. At a town meeting in 1755 the citizens of Chatham decided that the five residents of Chatham, including Nathaniel Bassett, who had become Baptists should continue to pay taxes for the ministry. A few years later, however, this practice was abolished and Nathaniel Bassett was thereafter listed among the Baptists not taxed for the maintenance of the ministry.

Children, all recorded in the Vital Records of Chatham (May. Desc., vol. 11, p. 41; vol. 12, p. 172). [Robert Ray King, "The Family of Nathan Bassett of Chatham," NEHGR 125:9]
