He married secondly, in Chatham, 15 Sept. 1763, Mary (Eldredge) Newcomb of Wellfleet, the widow of Joseph Newcomb and the daughter of Elisha and Dorcas (Mulford) Eldredge. She was born 15 March 1720/1.
Thomas Bassett died of smallpox during an epidemic that struck Chatham in early winter of 1765-1766. In a petition to the General Court, the selectmen of Chatham requested assistance for the families of the victims of the epidemic. Among those listed were the survivors of Thomas Bassett, for whom £10. 13s. 4d. was asked.
