Was Deputy to the General Court, Sandwich, MA (1666-1673); Assistant to the Governor, 1666-1686; 1689-91. From a deed dated 29 Apr 1674: "Edmond ffreman Junr. of Sandwich in the Colony of New Plimouth in America for a fatherly affection unto my son Joseph Burge & my daughter Patience the w. of Joseph Burge afsd... doe give freely... one moyetee of upland... in Sandwich, being formerly in the poss. of Edmond ffreeman Senr... six acres... doe give unto my son in law Joseph Burge... his heirs..." Signed Edmond ffreeman. Witnesses: Richard Bourne, the mark of Thomas Burge. The grantor personally appeared and acknowledged the instrument 2 Mar 1674/5, at which time "Margarett freeman his wife appeared and gave up... all her right in the meadow herein specified." Oct. 1652; Edmund, 5 Oct. 1655; Alice, 29 Mar. 1658; Rachel, 7 Sept. 1659; Sarah, 6 Feb. 1662; and Deborah, 9 Aug. 1665; was rep. and the time of d. of hims. or of his w. is unkn. [Savage, Gen. Mr. Edmond Freeman, Jr., was a Deputy to the General Court from the town of Sandwich 1669, seven tears.
Mr. F.'s 1st wife, Rebecca, was dr. of Gov. Thomas Prence, by his first marriage,; viz., to <i>Patience</i>, dr. of the venerable Mr. Brewster, b. 1560, and educated at the University of Cambridge, Eng., was ruling elder of the Leyden Church. He came to Plymouth with the early Pilgrims, continued highly esteemed, and died in Plym., April 16, 1644, æ. 83. Mrs. F.'s father, Gov. P., was from Lechdale, Eng.; and coming to Plym., 1621, — probably in the ship "Fortune," though Farmer says, in the ship "Anne,"—"was Governor of the Plym. Colony more than twenty years: greatly distinguished." His biographer says of him, "His appearance was peculiarly dignified and striking; he had a countenance full of majesty, and was therein a terror to evil-doers." He d. March 29, 1673, and was buried at Plym., April 8.
Mr. F.'s 2d wife Margaret, whom he m. July 18, 1651,—the former wife having died soon after giving birth to her only child,—may have survived her husband. They resided in Sandwich; but the date of decease of either, we are unable to state positively. [Freeman Genealogy by Frederick Freeman]
