General Notes:
CAPT. NATHANIEL3 PERRY (Benjamin,2 Ezra1), born 2 July 1713, died "in Service in Nova Scotia, aged 44 years" (New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, vol. 44, p. 334 et seq.). He married in Stoughton, Mass., in 1736, MEHITABLE (LEONARD) WILLIS "of Easton" (Endicott, op. cit.), born in Taunton, Mass., about 1705, died in Easton 2 Sept. 1797, "aet. 92", daughter of Capt. James Leonard of Taunton and the widow of John Willis of Easton. A double gravestone in Easton Cemetery commemorates Capt. Nathaniel and his wife Mehitable Perry.
No doubt he accompanied his father from Sandwich to Stoughton, where his name appears on a tax list in 1734. On 15 Oct. 1735 he and his brothers Josiah and Eliakim jointly purchased from their "Honoured father Benjamin Perry" 386 acres of Stoughton land. After his marriage he evidently moved to Easton in Bristol County. He and his wife evidently lived in Easton upon land given her by her father. In April 1740 "Nathaniel Perry of Easton" sold for £269. to Johnson Tolman of Dorchester, Mass., 140 acres of land (lot 39, 25th Division) in Stoughton (Suffolk County Deeds, vol. 61, p. 230). On 29 Aug. 1740 Nathaniel Perry "of Easton" bought from "Eliakim Perry of Stoughton, administrator of the estate of Thomas Tupper, deceased," for £187. 141 acres in Stoughton (lot 39, 25th Division) (ibid., vol. 61, p. 229). On the same date Nathaniel sold to his brother Josiah his third in the 386 acre tract, which the brothers had jointly bought from their "Honoured father Benjamin Perry" (ibid., vol. 63, p. 96). On 9 Sept. 1740 Nathaniel Perry of Easton and his wife Mehitable, and Josiah Perry of Stoughton and his wife Mary, jointly mortgaged Stoughton land (ibid., vol. 69, p. 109). On 20 Nov. 1740 Nathaniel purchased Stoughton land from his brother Josiah (ibid.). In this year Easton Church Records show him on a church committee there. On 17 Nov. 1744 Nathaniel Perry of Easton bought Easton land from Ezekiel Titus and "Patience his wife, daughter of Joseph Smith" (Bristol County Deeds). In 1747 Nathaniel signed the Easton First Church covenant and his wife Mehitable was also listed as a member. On 8 Nov. 1748 Samuel Pollard and Abigail his wife, of Taunton, cooper, sold to Nathaniel Perry of Easton land "formerly in the possession of our Honoured father Joseph Smith, late of Easton, deceased" (ibid., vol. 35, p. 634). On 1 Jan. 1750 Nathaniel Perry of Easton sold land in Norton, Mass., to Mehitable Smith of Norton (ibid., vol. 40, p. 151) and the same year Samuel Pollard of Taunton and Abigail his wife, with Henry Hix of Middleborough, Mass., sold land in Easton to Nathaniel Perry (ibid., vol. 37, p. 457). On 31 Oct. 1752 Nathaniel Perry of Easton sold to Hezekiah Smith of Easton land in Taunton (ibid., vol. 41, p. 267).
On 6 Nov. 1742 Nathaniel Perry of Easton received his com-mission as Captain of militia under Col. John Winslow. On 6 Nov. 1754 he had a company of 46 enlisted men and the next month received warrant for further enlistments. The Muster Roll of 8 November shows his signature (Massachusetts Archives, vol. 93, pp. 135, 139, etc.). On 29 May 1755 he raised a company of 96 men (the 2nd Battalion, Governor Shirley's Regiment) for "removing of the French encroachments from His Majesties Government of Nova Scotia" (ibid.). A letter from Nathaniel Perry to his wife, dated Fort Cumberland, N. S., 25 June 1755, and other details regarding him may be found in William L. Chaffin's History of the Town of Easton, 1886, pp. 160-1 et passim.
He left no will but the administration of his estate was granted 30 Aug. 1757. A deed, dated 2 May 1765, by James Leonard of Taunton, gentleman, gives land there "in consideration for the love I have towards my daughter Mehitable Perry and my grandson James Perry" and describes the latter as "heir of his late father, Capt. Nathaniel Perry, deceased" (Bristol County Deeds, vol. 50, p. 774). A deed, dated 10 Sept. 1770, by "Mehitable Perry of Taunton, widow," gives 30 acres in Taunton to her son James which she had inherited from her "father James Leonard" (ibid., vol. 53, p. 288). She was still living 11 April 1774, when she and her children sold land which "Nathaniel Perry bought of Joseph Smith's heirs" (ibid., vol. 56, p. 156). [Ezra Perry of Sandwich, Mass.
