General Notes:
Thomas2 Gibbs (Thomas1), born 23 March 1646/7, died in Sandwich 7 Jan. 1732 (May. Des., 29:22).
He married in Sandwich 23 Dec. 1674 Alice Warren, daughter of Nathaniel2 and Sarah (Walker) Warren. (He called "Junr." and she "Elles" Warren (May. Des., 14:111)), born at Plymouth 2 Aug. 1656, died after 6 Jan. 1689/90, and before the date of her husband's will. Through this marriage descendants can trace back to her grandfather Richard Warren, the Mayflower passenger.
The name of Thomas2 Gibbs appears on the 1675 list of those who had become freemen of Sandwich (Freeman, op. cit., 2:72). The will of Nathaniel Warren, dated 1667, does not name his daughters, but his widow Sarah Warren decided to distribute a part of the estate during her lifetime and by a deed of 6 Jan. 1689/90 she did so. Among the heirs who signed the instrument were Thomas Gibbs and the mark of Alice Gibbs (Plymouth County Deeds, 2:201/2, see copy May. Des., 7:144). We think it probable that Thomas2 Gibbs received his portion of the father's estate during the latter's lifetime, or by some unrecorded probate instrument, since, as we have seen, it was agreed in 1693 that his eldest brother John2 Gibbs was to have all the Sandwich property then remaining. The destruction of the original records by fire in 1827 makes it impossible to be certain of the location of Thomas2 Gibbs property; presumably he lived near his father's homestead in the Sagamore Hill section of North Sandwich. His name appears on a list of Sandwich inhabitants in 1702; he witnessed the will of William2 Swift of Sandwich, dated 15 Dec. 1705.
The will, dated 23 June 1725, of "Thomas Gibbs Senr., … of Sandwich … husbandman …" gives "To my son Thomas Gibbs ... all ... my Real Estate of what kind or Denomination Soever, he ... paying all my just debts & funeral Expenses as also ... Legacies. To my son Cornelius £30 in money. To my son Warren £10 ... If my sons Ebenezer and Jabez do Either or both of them return from beyond the Sea they shall have £10 … paid to ... either of them that shall So return and Demand ye same. To my daughter Abigail £10 … To ye children of my daughter Bethia £10...." The son of Thomas Gibbs was made sole executor. Witnesses: M. Bourne, Samuell Jennings, Bathsheba Newcomb (Barnstable County Probate, 5:24).
On 23 Jan. 1723/3 John Ellis, Mordecai Tupper & Obadiah Butler took the Inventory of the personal estate "of Mr. Thomas Gibbs Senr. of Sandwich, lately deceased, who has left his personall Estate Intestate." The son, "Thomas Gibbs, exhibited the above presented this 1 Feb. 1732/3" (ibid., p. 84). [Thomas1 Gibbs of Sandwich, Mass. (ca. 1615-1693) by Lydia B. (Phinney) Brownson and Maclean W.
