William1) & Maria4 Handy, b. Sandwich 6 April 1763; d. prob. after 24 April 1796 when his father's will raises the question whether he was still alive and before April 1799 when his widow remarried. Child, surname Gifford: 1. Sophronia, b. 28 Nov. 1789; d. 1 April 1852; mar. 19 Jan. 1815 Kimball6 Perry. Elizabeth mar. (2) 7 April 1799 BRIG. GEN. NATHANIEL6 FREEMAN (Sandwich Town Records), b. Yarmouth 28 March 1741; d. Sandwich, 20 Sept. 1827. He had fathered twelve children by his first wife, Tryphosa Colton. Children, surname Freeman: .2. The Rev. Since we did not find birth records for John Handy's children by his second wife, and neither John nor Elizabeth (Garrett) Handy left probate records, the evidence to support their existence depends on a footnote in Freeman, op. cit., 2:158. This represents conclusive evidence since the author, Frederick Freeman, would have had first hand knowledge of his mother's brothers and sisters and would have learned from them and from his mother their parentage and ancestry. Elizabeth married Josiah Gifford, son of Samuel Gifford and Maria Handy, on 17 Aug 1789 in Sandwich, Barnstable, MA ³⁶.^,93 (Josiah Gifford was born on 6 Apr 1763 in Sandwich, Barnstable, MA ^36,93 and died before Apr 1799 ⁹³.)

Elizabeth next married Brig. Gen. Nathaniel Freeman, son of Edmund Freeman and Martha Otis, on 7 Apr 1799 in Sandwich, Barnstable, MA ³⁶.^,57 (Brig. Gen. Nathaniel Freeman was born on 28 Mar 1741 in North Dennis, Barnstable, MA ⁵⁷ and died on 20 Sep 1827 in Sandwich, Barnstable, MA ^34,36,57.)
