MARIA, b. about 1739: bapt. 19 Aug. 1739; d. 3 Sept. 1805 "ae. 66" (Sandwich 1st Church Records); mar. 13 Dec. 1757 SAMUEL4 GIFFORD (Sandwich Town Records), b. 10 Feb. 1720/21 (ibid.), d. there, testate, in 1798, son of Josiah3 Gifford (John,2 William1) and Mercy (Chadwick). Children, surname Gifford: 1. Elizabeth, b. 6 Sept. 1759; d. Hyannis, 10 Sept. 1846; mar. ca. 1777 Capt. Job4 Handy (#33 below). 2. Mercy, b. 16 March 1761; living 24 April 1789, when named in her father's will. 3. Josiah, b. 6 April 1763; d. about 1798; mar. 27 Aug. 1789 Elizabeth Handy, daughter of John3 Handy (#14) by his second wife, Elizabeth (Garrett). One child, Sophronia, b. 28 Nov. 1789; d. Rochester 1 April 1852; mar. 19 Jan. 1815 Kimball6 Perry (Daniel5, Caleb4, Elijah3, John2, Ezra1). Elizabeth (Handy) Gifford, the widow, mar. (2) 1799 Gen. Nathaniel Freeman and became the mother of the Rev. Frederick Freeman and other children. 4. Hannah, b. 20 Feb. 1765; living 1796 when named in her father's will; probably never married. 5. Jemima, b. 10 Aug. 1767, also single at date of her father's will, but probably mar. 29 April 1804 Simeon West (Sandwich Town Records). 6. Maria, b. 6 Aug. 1770; unmar. at date of father's will. 7. Benjamin, b. 6 Sept. 1773; living 1796 when named in father's will. 8. Alden, b. 10 July 1775; mar. ca. 1803 Mercy; d. after 24 Sept. 1815 when he and his family dismissed by the Sandwich Church to that in Locke, N. Y. 9. Maria married Samuel Gifford, son of Josiah Gifford and Mercy Chadwick, on 13 Dec 1757 in Sandwich, Barnstable, MA ³⁶.^,93 (Samuel Gifford was born on 10 Feb 1720/21 in Sandwich, Barnstable, MA ^36,93 and died in Apr 1798 in Sandwich, Barnstable, MA ^36,93.)
