Capt. Charles5 Gibes (Barnabas,4 Barnabas,3 John,2 Thomas1), born 19 May 1756, died in Sandwich 6 Nov. 1825 (Frederick Free­man, History of Cape Cod, vol. 2, p. 147).

He married, first, about 1785, Lucy5 Smith, daughter of Isaac4 and Hannah Smith, born in Sandwich 1 Dec. 1765, baptized 19 Jan. 1766, died there 10 Oct. 1800 "aet. 34" (Sandwich Church Records). She was admitted to full communion in the Sandwich Church 29 Sept. 1800. On the same day their children: Charles, Barnabas, Rufus, Hannah, Catherine, and Alvin "children of Charles & Lucy Gibbs" were baptized.

He married, secondly, about 1802, Mary [?Briggs] who has not been positively identified.

Charles Gibbs served various enlistments in the Revolutionary War. In a muster roll dated 28 July 1780 he is described as "ae. 25, stature: 5'9", Complexion: light".

He was head of a Sandwich family in the 1790 Census, with one male over 16, three under 16, and one female. The Sandwich Town Deed Books (Barnstable Registry of Deeds) contain several abstracts of conveyances describing this man as a "mariner, of Sandwich".

The will, dated 3 Nov., proved 13 Nov. 1825, of "Charles Gibbs of Sandwich" gives "to my well beloved wife Mary" all real estate and personal estate while she remains his widow. After her death or re­marriage he ordered the estate "divided equally between my two sons Isaac and Philip Briggs Gibbs" whom he named co-executors, they to pay the following legacies: "To my daughter Catherine $50. To my daughter Lucy Smith $50. To my daughter Sarah Delia $50, To the children of my son Rufus, deceased, $15 each. To the child of my daughter Hannah, deceased, $5." Witnessed by David L.
