John Ellis

  General Notes:

JOHN4 ELLIS (Malachi,3 Lt. Matthias,2 Lt. John1), born 19 April 1718, died after 28 Aug. 1784, probably before the 1790 Census where his name does not appear. He certainly was dead before 5 Nov. 1793 (see below).

He married 11 April 1745 MARIA LANDERS, born in Sandwich 30 Dec. 1719, died perhaps before 28 Aug. 1784, since she did not quitclaim conveyances of that date, daughter of John3 and Content (Nye) Landers of Sandwich.

The will, dated 31 March 1762, of Malachi3 Ellis gives to his son John Ellis and his heirs the sum of £14. 13s. 8d., and wearing apparel. Evidently this John Ellis acquired land and settled in Rochester but we cannot find whether this came through inheritance or was purchased. That he was a property holder in Rochester is shown by his conveyances to his three sons: "John Ellis of Rochester, yeoman ... for £70. paid by my son John Ellis of Rochester" conveyed a part of "my homestead farm in Rochester, by the dividing line between Dartmouth and Rochester ... 30 acres," 28 Aug. 1784 (acknowledged 6 April 1789, recorded 15 April 1795--PLCD., vol. 77, p. 213-14). By a deed dated the same day, 28 Aug. 1784, "John Ellis of Rochester, yeoman," conveyed "for £100. paid by my son Thomas Ellis of Rochester, yeoman, ... a certain parcel or division of my homestead farm, situated in Rochester, beginning at the Tar Kiln Line, ... corner by my son Joshua Ellis's land, ... thence west to the dividing line between Dartmouth and Rochester thence easterly in the line of Charles Tinkham's land, including my dwelling house, barn, corn house ... about 50 acres" (acknowledged 6 April 1789, recorded 17 May 1796--ibid., vol. 79, p. 307-8). A third deed of the same date, 28 Aug. 1784, "John Ellis of Rochester, yeoman," conveyed "for £70. paid by my son Joshua Ellis of Rochester, yeoman, ... a certain parcel or division of my household farm lying in Rochester ... from the Tar Kiln line ... the South East corner of my son John Ellis's Land ... thence by ... the dividing line between Dartmouth and Rochester ... about 26 Acres" (acknowledged 6 April 1789, recorded 18 May 1796--ibid., vol. 79, p. 207-8).

Joshua5 Ellis and his wife Azubah conveyed to his brother Thomas5 Ellis the same 26 acre lot in a deed, 25 Nov. 1793, which the grantor had acquired 28 Aug. 1784 from "my Honoured father, John Ellis Late of Rochester, deceased" (ibid.,vol. 77, p. 214).
