  General Notes:

DEA. EPMRAIM4 ELLIS (Malachi,3 Lt. Matthias,2 Lt. John1), born 20 Oct. 1716, died 4 June 1783 "aet. 67."
He married shortly after 28 May 1738, his second cousin, REBECCA4 ELLIS, born in Sandwich 28 March 1709, died there before 9 Nov. 1754, daughter of John3 and Sarah (Holmes) Ellis. The will of John3 Ellis, dated 30 July 1748, names his "daughter Rebecca," but fails to give her married name. Fortunately the will's codicil, dated 9 Nov. 1757, furnishes conclusive proof that this daughter married Ephraim Ellis for it gives "one quarter of my quick stock ... to the sons of my daughter Rebecca Ellis, deceased, named Malachi and Nathaniel."

Ephraim and Rebecca Ellis both joined the Sandwich Church 28 May 1738. In 1787 the Rev. Mr. Burr noted in the margin of his church record that Ephraim Ellis had died in 1783 "aet. 67."

The will, dated 31 March 1762, of Malachi3 Ellis gives "unto my eldest son Ephraim Ellis" the family dwelling house and considerable real property in Sandwich.
The will, dated 15 June 1773 and proved 8 July 1783, of "Ephraim Ellis of Sandwich, ... yeoman, being under decay of body" gives "To my son Malachi Ellis all my household goods I have lent him and which he now improves. To my son Nathaniel Ellis the bed on which I lie and my best coverlet. To my two sons Malachi Ellis and Nathaniel Ellis and to their heirs ... to be equally divided between them, all my lands, meadows, buildings ... all my Real Estate whatsoever and all my Personal Estate, provided that they pay my debts & funeral charges ... they to be my executors." Witnesses: Jabez Handy, Samuell Gibbs, Junr. (the Rev.) Abraham Williams (Bamstable County probate, vol. 23, p. 101).

Ephraim Ellis was voted a deacon of the Sandwich Church 14 April and accepted 7 June 1774. The Rev. Frederick Freeman (History of Cape Cod, vol. 2, p. 133) tells us that "Mr. Ephraim Ellis ... was emphatically a good man. He was probably without ordination, but was much employed in preaching to the Indians."
The inventory of Ephraim Ellis' estate was taken 5 April 1785 by Thomas Burgess, Samuel Tupper and Peleg Tupper. Real Estate: £151. 6s. 8d. Tocal: £184. 7s. 4d. (Barnstable County Probate, vol. 23, p. 102, 286).
