General Notes:
SAMUEL4 PERRY (Samuel,3 Ezra,2 Ezra1) was born 25 Oct. 1735. He married in Sandwich, Mass., 2 Nov. 1758, THANKFUL BOURNE (Sandwich town records, vol. 1, p. 153), daughter of Job4 Bourne and a sister of Lydia Bourne who married Seth4 Perry.
Capt. Thomas C. Perry relates that Samuel4 Perry was, for some reason not stated, called "the wrestler" and that he lived upon the home lot of grandfather Ezra2 Perry, whose house he "took down." Further research is needed here, but we believe that we now come to the first of Ezra Perry's descendants who espoused the Tory side in the civil strife caused by the Revolution. Lorenzo Sabine in his Biographical Sketches of Loyalists of The American Revolution, 1864, vol. 2, p. 565, wrote: "Perry, Seth of Sandwich who was imprisoned in that town and who with Samuel, Stephen, Thomas and Silas, fled to the British troops in Rhode Island. Of these Samuel, Thomas and Silas, each with a family, went from New York to Shelburne, Nova Scotia in 1783 and received grants of land. Seth, a fourth, returned to Mass, and in 1788 was admitted to rights and citizenship by act of the legislature." We suggest that this group of Loyalist Perrys may be identified as this Samuel4 Perry, his eldest son Stephen5 (aet. 22 in 1777); Thomas5 (born in 1749, son of Nathan4 Perry), Silas5 (born in 1753, son of Zachariah4 Perry). Also Seth4 Perry who married this Samuel's sister-in-law, Lydia Bourne. With the exception of this last named Seth Perry, all these families disappear from the Sandwich records after 1777. Many of the 30,000 refugees to Shelburne in 1783 later returned to the United States and it is hoped that further search will reveal the whereabouts of descendants of this group of Perrys. Samuel was known as "the wrestler". He lived on his grandfather Ezra’s homestead, and was likely the first to support the "Tory’s" in this branch. He was imprisoned in Sandwich, but fled to the British troops in Rhode Island. The families of Samuel, Thomas and Silas all moved to Shelburne, N.S. in 1783. He had served in the British Navy during the Revolution, and was granted 375 A at Cape Negro, near Shelbourne (he arrived with the Port Roseway Associates). [PERRY.TXT, Kindred Konnections-Bumpus]
