General Notes:
JOHN5 PERRY (Silas,4 John,3 John,2 Ezra1), born in that section of Sandwich, Mass., which in 1884 became Bourne 10 Oct. 1751, died 3 June 1826 "in his 76th Yr." (gravestone, Middle Monument, now Bourne Cemetery). He married in Falmouth, Mass, (intention 18 Feb. 1776), JEMIMA SWIFT "of Falmouth" (Falmouth town records, vol. 2, p. 23), born about 1758, died in Sandwich 15 Dec. 1821, daughter of Jabez and Hannah5 (Perry) Swift (q.v.).
This John Perry was given a gun and a sword in the will of his grandfather, "Weaver John" Perry, in 1760. His father died when he was about ten years old and on 1 Dec. 1761 his mother was appointed his guardian. In 1764 his grandfather John Perry's estate was distributed and he thus fell heir to a considerable real estate in Sandwich. His mother remarried in 1767 and he is named in her will, dated in 1805. A quit-claim shows that his wife also inherited Perry property: "This may certify that we Abraham Swift of Falmouth and Jemima Perry of Sandwich both in the County of Barnstable have received of our Unkel John Perry of Sandwich executor of the Last Will and Testament of our Grandfather Elijah Perry late of Sandwich, Deceased, all the personl Estate which we can claim or demand by virtue of our Grand Father's Will which is dated May ye 30th 1768 and we hereby acquit and fully discharge the said John Perry for ourselves and for our sister Hanner Swift of Falmouth we doe acknoleg our Silves satisfied for ourselves and our sister Hannar in witness whereof we do set our hands this 3rd day of December A.D. 1790. John Perry, Jemima Perry, Abraham Swift. Attest: Ebenezer Raymond, Daniel Perry" (Thomas C. Perry, Note Book, p. 58).
This John Perry was called "shoemaker John" to distinguish him from contemporary relatives of the same name. The 1790 Census lists three men named John Perry in Sandwich as heads of families, namely: "John Perry" [called "miller John"] (1739-1809); "John Perry Junr." [called "shoemaker John," subject of this sketch]; and "John Perry 3rd" (c. 1759-1847), son of Timothy Perry. It seems evident that this John Perry purchased the shares in the real property in Sandwich which his brothers Lemuel and Silas had inherited from their father and grandfather, because we know that Lemuel moved to Dartmouth, Mass., and Silas moved to Woodstock, Vt. Capt. Thomas C. Perry tells us that "shoemaker" John Perry lived in the old house which had been built by his grandfather until the structure was destroyed by fire in 1794. He then built the house on that site which, in 1850, was owned by his son Silas. "Shoemaker John & Jemima (Swift) Perry were founding members in the first Methodist Society in Monument" (Thomas C. Perry, Note Book, p. 134). [Ezra Perry of Sandwich, Mass. (c. 1625-1689), By Lydia B. (Phinney) Brownson, of Buzzard's Bay, Mass., and Maclean W. McLean, of Pittsburgh, Pa., NEHGS 115 (1960)]
He was known as "Shoemaker John", to distinguish him from his grandfather (Weaver John) and his neighbours (Miller John and John the 3rd). He inherited considerable lands in Sandwich, especially from his grandfather John’s estate. Shoemaker John lived in the house which had been built by his grandfather until it burned in 1794. John and Jemima were founding members of the first Methodist Society in Monument. [PERRY.TXT]
