ELEVENTH GENERATION
1198. John Landers
was born on 24 Mar 1747/48 in Sandwich, Barnstable, MA.
(660)(147) He died after 1790
in Sandwich, Barnstable, MA.(147) John5
Landers (John4-3-2, Thomas1), born 24 Mar 1747/8, died after the date of the
1790 Census.
He married (int. 30 Dec 1775) Patience Bates (Plymouth Vital Records - he called
"of Sandwich"; May. Des., 27:177).
The 1790 Census lists John Landers at Sandwich with a family of one male over
16, two under 16, and one female. This puzzled us. John3 Landers had left all
his real estate in Sandwich to this man's father, John4 Landers. The latter's
son and namesake, John5 Landers would seem to have acquired the ancestral land
in Sandwich since we know that his brothers, Joseph5 and Abraham5, had gone to
Maine prior to the Census. John Landers is the only one remaining in Sandwich.
But it seems strange that if John Landers of the 1790 Census is the man who married
Patience Bates in 1775 he would have but one child, a male under 16, at the date
of the Census, since the fragmentary records indicate that there were not one
but two male Landers who are called "of Sandwich" when they married
in 1810 and 1812. If the elder of the two was apprenticed at the time, this would
seem the most likely explanation, but no proof has come to light and we find
no probates for either John or Patience (Bates) Landers.
