number 8MM7-6J. John2 Landers (Thomas1), born 2 Jan 1653/54, died in Sandwich
15 Apr 1737 (May. Des. 29:28).
He married about 1686 Rachel Freeman, daughter of Edmond2 Freeman by his second
wife, Margaret (Perry) Freeman, born in Sandwich 4 Sep 1659,* died 7 Oct ?1709.
It is interesting to note that Edmond2 Freeman, Rachel's father, then aged fifteen,
came to New England on the same ship with John's father who was then aged 22.
The young men went together to Lynn and later to Sandwich, so it is not surprising
that three of Thomas Landers' sons married three daughters of Edmond Freeman,
as will be seen. Proof that Rachel Freeman married this John Landers is to be
found in the final distribution of the estate of Edmond Freeman, dated 9 Jun
1705, by which under an "agreement of the children of the deceased",
payment was made "To John Landers and Rachel his wife" £1.6s.
(Barnstable County Probates, 2:190; see also "Edmond Freeman of Sandwich"
in The American Genealogist, 40:108, Apr 1964).
In 1672 John Launders turned in two dozen blackbirds' heads, thus proving to
his descendants that, as a teenager, he was a fair shot. His name appears in
a list, dated 8 Oct 1691, of Sandwich townsmen (Frederick Freeman, "Annals
of Sandwich": History of Cape Cod, 2:82).
We find no probate of his estate; he evidently died intestate. It seems probable
that he distributed both real and personal estate by deeds, as was frequently
done at that period, but proof of this is not forthcoming because of the fire
of 1827 which destroyed all but two of the volumes of land records of Barnstable
County.
* The last digit of the year of birth of Rachel Freeman "has been marked
over. Savage (1860) and Freeman (1862) both show 1659" notes G. E. Bowman
in May. Des., 14:110. We have found no original record of her death. But, again,
M. E. Cooley (The Cooley Genealogy, 1941, 2:872) gives the date shown above without
reference. Rachel was living 9 Jun 1705, so the date shown by Cooley is not inconsistent
with known data, but proof is lacking.

Rachel Freeman and John Landers had the following children:
+127 i.
Alice Landers.
128 ii.
Richard Landers was born on 6 Mar 1688/89 in Sandwich, Barnstable, MA.
(154)(155)
(20)
(21)(118)
(147)(15)
(29) He died after 25 May 1730. Richard3, b. 6 March 1688/9; no death
record found, but he evidently died intestate (and unmarried?).* He is described
as "of Sandwich" when he, his brother John and Gershom Tobey, by a
deed 25 May 1730, bought a tract of land in Bridgewater. The Rev. Benjamin Fessenden's
lists of Sandwich householders in 1730 lists this Richard Landers (#110) as head
of a family. It is possible that Richard's household then consisted of his widowed
father and his two unmarried sisters, Deborah and Margaret. Since no probate
of his estate is to be found, he probably distributed his real estate and other
property by deeds which were destroyed in the 1827 fire at Barnstable.
* Mrs. Hannah Landers of Sandwich published her intentions of marriage to Mr.
John Bursley of Barnstable, 4 Feb. 1743 (Barnstable Vital Records in the May.
Des. 33:166). The Sandwich Town Records show the death of Hannah Bursley, wife
of John, 29 Nov. 1744. We can not place this Hannah Landers, but Bursley was
the sea captain, John3 (John2-1), the widower of Mary Crocker. We suggest that
Capt. John Bursley, b. 1 Mar 1677/8, would have been the right age to marry the
widow of this Richard Landers if instead of having been unmarried, he died childless
leaving a widow Hannah.
